Your war base layout is separate from your main base layout, and attacks against your war base are separate from your main base.
The biggest difference between your war base and your normal base is that you cannot lose any resource through someone attacking your war base.
REPEAT: When someone attacks your war base they cannot steal any of your normal resource. All of the resource they get from attacking you is free and doesn't cost you a thing.
For this reason it is far less important to protect your gold and elixir, and far more important to protect the things that defend your village.
Town Hall:
If someone destroys your town hall it earns them an immediate star. For this reason, this is the most important building to protect. Always try and place this building in the very centre of your village where it is protected the most.
Clan Castle:
Your clan mates will donate high level troops to your war castle during preparation day, and these troops will charge out to defend your village whenever it gets attacked. Unlike your main base, when these troops are destroyed they will regenerate immediately after the battle, and will defend your village time after time until the end of the war.
It is important to try and keep these defending troops as close to your Town Hall as possible. A common tactic of the enemy is to lure your defending castle troops away from the main defences of your village where they can be surrounded and destroyed more easily. For this reason, always try and locate your clan castle as close to the centre of your base as possible.
Mortars and Wizard Towers:
These towers do splash damage so will damage multiple targets at the same time. Mortars have a long range and should be placed nearer the middle of your village. Wizard towers have a shorter range so should be positioned further out.
Try not to bunch these towers too close together and make sure they are evenly located throughout your base design.
HINT: If you select a tower or defensive structure it will display a large circle around it. This radius shows you how far the tower can fire when enemy troops approach.
Air Defence:
These towers are your best defence against Dragons, Balloons and anything else that flies in the air. Never place these outside of your base walls or you will become very vulnerable to air attacks.
The most popular attack strategy for town hall levels 6, 7 and 8 is Giants and Archers. This strategy is most effective when you include a couple of Healers to keep the giants alive. Your best defence against this strategy is to kill those healers as quickly as possible. For this reason keep your air defence well inside your walls and separate them far from one another to defend all sides of your base. The harder your air defence is to destroy, the harder it will be for these types of attacks to succeed.
Cannon & Archer Towers:
These are usually your first line of defence against attacking troops. They have a good range and can start to pepper the enemy before they reach your walls. Place these around the perimeter of your village, preferably just inside your first line of walls.
Cannons only attack ground based units, whereas Archer Towers can attack both ground and air units. Try to distribute them evenly so you have a balanced defence of ground and air on all sides of your base.
Traps:
Spring traps, Bombs, Air Bombs and skeletons are all small traps that can be located throughout your village. They only need 1 square of space to be placed down (except the Big Bomb which needs 4).
Giants will always target the next closest defensive structure, so placing spring traps on a direct line between towers will increase your chances of flinging the enemy into the air.
Skeleton traps can be lethal to many different attack strategies, but are far less effective when placed around the edge of your base. Make sure these are located well inside you base and they will cause all sorts of problems for attacking troops.
Big Bombs can completely decimate large numbers of swarming troops with low hit points. They are particularly deadly against Barbarians, Archers, Wizards and Hogs. Place these in bottle necks where swarming troops tend to congregate. Pay close attention to your defensive replays and move them according if needed.
Hidden Tesla:
This is unlocked at town hall level 7. These defensive towers are invisible to the enemy and will pop up from the ground when enemy troops get near.
They are smaller than the other tower and take up less floor space, allowing you to place them in smaller areas where you think they will catch the enemy off guard.
X-Bows & Inferno Towers:
These are not unlocked until town hall levels 9 and 10, by which time you should have a well-established base already.
Due to their large range and high damage output most players choose to locate these near the centre of their village to protect the town hall and inner core of their base. A common mistake however, is to place them too close together. Freeze spells can temporarily disable multiple towers in one hit so make sure you place them far enough away from one another to avoid this mistake.
